A potential AMD Gainsborough APU, rumored as a candidate for the Valve Steam Deck 2, has appeared in leaked OpenBenchmarking data. This engineering sample features six CPU cores and twelve threads, representing a 50% increase over the current Steam Deck hardware, alongside a 2.4 GHz base clock.
The tested configuration includes 24 GB of LPDDR5 RAM operating at 9600 MT/s, a significant upgrade from the 16 GB at 6400 MT/s found in the original device. While these specifications may not reflect the final product, they suggest active testing of higher memory capacities by Valve, AMD, or other OEMs.
Regarding performance, the Gainsborough APU scored 3,508 in Furmark at a 1024 x 768 resolution. Although direct comparisons are difficult, the current Steam Deck achieved 3,323 points at 1280 x 800. These results, potentially influenced by early drivers, indicate promising GPU capabilities for future hardware.
The APU is expected to utilize Zen 6 or Zen 6c architecture, though the specific core configuration remains unconfirmed. There is speculation that AMD might incorporate Zen 6 LP cores. Furthermore, the potential shift toward semi-custom or off-the-shelf components suggests this silicon could eventually power systems beyond the Steam Deck 2.
