Riot Games has announced significant changes to the champion Mel in League of Legends, specifically targeting her Rebuttal (W) ability. According to a blog post from October 20, the developer determined that Mel is no longer in an acceptable state due to high ban rates and balancing difficulties at professional and apex levels of play.
The core of the rework involves removing the ability to reflect projectiles. Instead, the new W will destroy incoming projectiles to generate a shield for Mel and nearby allies. Riot noted that while they attempted to preserve the reflection mechanic, they concluded that keeping it outside of an ultimate slot inevitably caused excessive opponent frustration.
Additional adjustments include tweaks to her other abilities. Her root (E) will be less effective against nearby enemies, and the burst damage from Searing Brilliance (Q) is being reduced. Conversely, the Q will now provide a flat cooldown refund upon hitting an enemy champion, and her ultimate will receive increased cooldown reduction as it is leveled.
The rework is scheduled to go live with League of Legends patch 26.22 on Wednesday, November 4. While the author of the PCGamesN report expresses personal sadness over the loss of the reflect mechanic, they acknowledge the change may shift Mel into a more balanced, supportive role.
