A recent report by Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliot indicates that physical disc sales for Resident Evil: Requiem on PlayStation consoles generated 1.8 times more revenue than the combined digital and physical sales of the game on Xbox platforms.

According to Elliot's estimates, physical copies accounted for 1.3 million units sold, representing 15 percent of the title's total revenue and 30.2 percent of its PlayStation-specific revenue. These figures highlight that physical media remains a significant contributor to total earnings for certain single-player games.

The report notes that physical sales are particularly strong in Japan, where cultural habits favor discs. This trend contrasts with sports titles like FC 27, where physical copies represent only 8.9 percent of sales. Despite this, Sony continues to push toward a digital-only future, recently launching a digital-only PS5 in Japan for $350.

Sony remains committed to its digital strategy despite public backlash. PlayStation founder Ken Kutaragi recently characterized the attachment to physical discs as a "mentality issue" regarding game ownership, even as consumers express frustration over the shift.
