A recent report from Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliot highlights the enduring strength of physical media on PlayStation consoles. Specifically, physical copies of Resident Evil: Requiem have generated significantly more profit than the combined digital and physical sales of the same title on Xbox platforms.
According to the provided estimates, Resident Evil: Requiem achieved 1.3 million physical unit sales, which accounts for 30.2% of its total revenue on Sony hardware. These physical transactions alone yielded 1.8 times the profit compared to the entire sales volume recorded on Xbox.
Other single-player titles demonstrate similar trends, with physical discs contributing substantially to overall performance. For instance, Wolverine sold 800,000 physical copies out of a 2.6 million total. Furthermore, the Japanese market continues to show strong support for physical media, as seen with titles like Pragmata and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, where physical sales exceeded 44%.
Despite these figures, the industry faces a shift toward digital distribution. PlayStation founder Ken Kutaragi noted that physical media has transitioned into a metaphor for ownership, suggesting that the move to digital is primarily a change in consumer mindset. Additionally, sports titles like FC 27 show a stark contrast, with physical sales accounting for only 8.9% of their total.
