Microsoft is preparing for a significant hardware expansion, with plans to release a new portable gaming device by the 2027 holiday season, followed by the next-generation home console, Project Helix, in 2028. These details were shared by Asha Sharma and other Microsoft executives in an interview with Fortune.
Project Helix faces a major pricing challenge, as internal projections estimate a consumer cost between 1,200 and 1,800 dollars. This potential price point, which could be mitigated if Microsoft chooses to subsidize the hardware, would make it one of the most expensive systems in the industry.
Internal development has been marked by disagreements regarding software. While Windows leaders pushed for a version of Windows Home on the portable device, the Xbox team sought to control their own software to optimize gaming performance. Additionally, engineering timelines have been accelerated, with AI being utilized as a tool to address specific performance and development hurdles.
Beyond hardware, Xbox is planning a restructuring of the Game Pass service into a tiered structure, allowing users to select features like cloud gaming and exclusive add-ons a la carte. These strategic shifts aim to grow the platform's daily active user base toward a goal of 1,000 million people, with financial improvements expected by Microsoft's 2027 fiscal year.
