Alinea Analytics has released data regarding the state of physical media on PlayStation platforms. This report arrives amidst ongoing industry discussions concerning the future of physical discs, particularly following Sony's announcement that it intends to cease physical media production for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
The data highlights a distinct divide in consumer behavior. Players of single-player, narrative-focused titles show a stronger preference for physical copies, whereas those playing sports or multiplayer games lean heavily toward digital purchases. For instance, Marvel's Wolverine saw 32.3% of its total revenue come from physical sales, while Resident Evil Requiem reached 30.2%.
Despite these specific high-performing titles, total physical game revenue for 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PS4 remained below 20% of the annual total, amounting to $655 million. Analysts note that this figure is influenced by the prevalence of digital-only releases and digital-exclusive pre-order incentives.
Sony appears to be prioritizing digital distribution due to higher profit margins and the elimination of second-hand market competition. While physical sales for major titles like Resident Evil Requiem generated $92.3 million, the company anticipates greater long-term financial gains by transitioning away from physical media entirely.
