Key information
Sony has filed a patent titled Generation Super Sampling (US-20260320740-A1) that outlines a frame generation method for the PlayStation 6. This technology aims to create interpolated frames based on traditionally rendered images, providing a clearer look at how the company intends to implement this feature in its next-generation console.
Unlike standard frame generation that relies solely on motion vectors, the proposed Sony model incorporates data from the controller. By utilizing player input, the system aims to predict movement more accurately between frames, which is intended to minimize latency and stuttering during gameplay transitions.
The documentation suggests the system could generate multiple frames, a capability noted in PC hardware like the RTX 5090 since 2025. However, the author notes that the utility of generating multiple frames on consoles is questionable, as most TVs are limited to 120 Hz, unlike high-refresh-rate PC monitors.
Concerns remain regarding whether developers might force this feature to hit frame rate targets, potentially introducing visual artifacts or latency. While Sony has filed various patents, including those for AI system monitoring and NFC controller integration, these remain speculative technologies that may not reach the final market.
