Piotr Babieno, CEO of Bloober Team, and Tymon Smektala of Broken Mirror Games have publicly advocated for the continued production of physical video games. Both executives expressed that their personal history as collectors deeply influences their professional perspective, making it difficult for them to view the industry as separate from tangible products.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, the developers acknowledged the economic incentives driving companies like Sony toward a digital-only future. Babieno noted that while digital distribution is cheaper and more profitable for businesses, he intends to produce physical versions of his titles for as long as possible.
Babieno emphasized that physical media fosters an emotional connection between players and developers. He argued that while AI can generate visual and auditory content, the tactile nature of physical games remains essential, suggesting that the industry risks losing a vital relationship with its fanbase if it abandons physical releases.
This stance aligns with other industry figures, including Hideo Kojima, Yoko Taro, and Dan Houser, who have also criticized PlayStation's reported plan to cease disc production by 2028. Despite this widespread opposition from developers and players, Sony has not indicated any change to its digital-focused strategy.
