The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) organization is updating its rating system to address concerns regarding loot boxes. Existing video games that contain paid random items will now be reclassified to a minimum age rating of 16, regardless of their original classification.
Connor Hinde, director of policy at the Games Rating Authority, confirmed that titles previously rated PEGI 3, 7, or 12 will be adjusted to PEGI 16 if they include such mechanics. This policy applies to games rated through both the classic PEGI procedure and the International Age Rating Coalition system.
The implementation process began last week for a selection of digital titles and includes a new label stating "PEGI 16 - Paid random items." These changes are expected to roll out gradually throughout October, with developers and publishers already notified of the upcoming adjustments.
While PEGI moves forward with these stricter standards, the Entertainment Software Rating Board in the United States does not plan to mirror these changes. The organization stated that adopting similar measures could potentially cause confusion for consumers.
