Key information
The Pan-European Game Information system has initiated a policy to re-rate existing digital-only titles that incorporate paid random items. Games previously assigned a PEGI 3, 7, or 12 rating are being elevated to a PEGI 16 classification.
Connor Hinde, policy manager at the Games Rating Authority, confirmed that the organization began implementing these updated criteria for select digital titles last week. This new designation, specifically labeled PEGI 16 - Paid random items, applies regardless of whether the software was initially rated via the IARC system or the Classic procedure.
The implementation process is scheduled to continue progressively throughout October. The GRA noted that a significant volume of rating adjustments will occur rapidly and has advised developers and publishers to contact the PEGI Helpdesk for assistance regarding these changes.
While PEGI moves forward with these updates, the Entertainment Software Rating Board stated in March that it will not adopt similar age-rating modifications. The ESRB expressed concern that such changes could potentially confuse consumers.
