The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) organization is raising the age rating to at least 16 for all games that include paid random items. This policy, officially announced on October 6, applies to both new releases and existing digital titles previously rated 3, 7, or 12.
Games affected by this reclassification will receive a new specific descriptor labeled 'Paid random items.' This update follows a broader set of criteria introduced in June, which evaluates elements such as in-game currency spending, systems encouraging continuous play, and communication features.
Connor Hinde, policy manager at the Video Standards Council (VSC) Rating Board, confirmed that the implementation began last week for selected digital titles. The adjustment covers games rated via the 'PEGI Classic' method or the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) system, with changes rolling out gradually throughout October across all online storefronts.
Developers and publishers must update product descriptions, age labels, and promotional materials to reflect these changes. While PEGI announced this adjustment in March, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in North America previously stated it would not adopt the same policy, citing concerns over potential user confusion.
