Key information
Paramount has officially acquired the rights to Pierce Brown’s science fiction saga, Red Rising. The studio has tapped Francis Lawrence to direct the inaugural film adaptation, with Justin Rhodes attached as screenwriter and Brown serving as executive producer. This development, confirmed by Variety following reports from The Hollywood Reporter, marks a significant investment for the studio.
The narrative centers on a dystopian Mars stratified by color-coded castes. Darrow, a member of the lowly Red class, discovers the systemic deception governing his society. Following personal tragedy, he infiltrates the elite Gold class to dismantle their Roman-inspired regime from within. The series, which began in 2014, has expanded to six published novels with a seventh, Red God, currently in development.
Lawrence’s appointment is viewed as a logical choice given his extensive experience with dystopian themes, notably his work on The Hunger Games franchise. Rhodes, who previously worked on the BioShock film project for Netflix, joins the production team. Despite previous failed attempts by other studios to adapt the material since 2014, this current iteration is positioned as a serious cinematic endeavor.
While the project represents a major milestone for the franchise, which has surpassed 6 million copies sold, specific details regarding the cast and release date remain unannounced. The production is currently in its early stages, leaving the timeline for the film's debut uncertain.
