Sony has introduced a new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in a Midnight Black colorway, currently available for pre-order exclusively in Japan. The console, which features a matte-black finish for both the system and the included DualSense controller, is priced at 55,000 yen, approximately $350. Pre-orders for this model commenced on Oct. 20, with a scheduled release date of Nov. 19.

This digital-only console lacks a built-in disc drive, though Sony offers a compatible Midnight Black disc drive add-on for 11,980 yen, or about $75. The hardware is identical to the Japan-exclusive PS5 model released last year, serving as a lower-priced alternative within the Japanese market due to specific trade policies and import tariffs.

Acquiring this unit presents significant challenges for international consumers. Major Japanese retailers like Amazon Japan, Rakuten, and Yodobashi restrict sales to domestic customers. Furthermore, Sony Interactive Entertainment notes that the console is strictly limited to the Japanese language and requires a Japanese PlayStation account. Users are restricted to accessing the Japanese PlayStation Store and can only play digital titles purchased through that specific storefront.

Given these severe regional limitations, the manufacturer suggests that non-Japanese fans seeking the aesthetic might prefer purchasing a standard console and separate Midnight Black covers. Alternatively, consumers may consider buying a standard PlayStation 5 model before potential future price increases.
