Netflix is currently struggling to meet its internal goals for video game engagement. A company memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal indicates that only 3.5% of subscribers engage with games on a monthly basis. This figure places the streaming service 10% behind its established 2026 targets for reach and engagement.
The company has shifted its strategic focus over time. While Netflix previously explored the development of AAA titles by hiring high-profile industry talent, it has since pivoted toward mobile and social gaming experiences. These efforts are intended to keep users within the brand ecosystem after they finish watching specific television shows.
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated that he does not anticipate the company abandoning its gaming division in the near future. The platform continues to offer tie-in titles for franchises such as Stranger Things and Love is Blind, alongside original commissions like Unhinged and The Conjuring: Unspoken.
Beyond original content, Netflix has leveraged partnerships with Take-Two Interactive to host high-profile media, including the GTA 6 Extended Look trailer. Red Dead Redemption remains accessible to subscribers, highlighting the company's ongoing efforts to integrate gaming into its broader entertainment strategy despite current growth challenges.
