Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 concludes the modern series with a narrative centered on betrayal and vengeance. The plot initiates with an electromagnetic pulse attack on South Korea, orchestrated by The Archer, the Russian Minister of Defense and leader of the Konni ultranationalist group, to facilitate a broader invasion plan.
The campaign features significant character deaths, including Vladimir Makarov, Phillip Graves, and Valeria Garza. Captain John Price pursues a path of vengeance, eventually killing Makarov and Graves, while The Archer executes Valeria. Tensions within the Task Force 141 lead to the death of Gaz, who is shot by The Archer while in captivity.
The climax reveals The Archer as Makarov's father. Following a final confrontation, Price kills The Archer but sustains fatal injuries, dying shortly after reconciling with Ghost. Ghost survives the events, though he loses his Task Force 141 companions, and the North Korean commander Ri Ju-Young is also killed during the palace invasion.
A post-credits scene depicts CIA agent Kate Laswell erasing the official records of Price, Ghost, and Gaz, effectively dissolving the Task Force 141 as a recognized organization. This conclusion leaves Ghost alive and establishes a narrative connection to the DMZ mode for future stories within the franchise.
