Nvidia has secured a significant design win for its Vera CPUs with AI cloud provider Modal. According to internal evaluations, the Vera processors demonstrated twice the throughput compared to the AMD and Intel chips currently utilized by the firm for its agentic AI infrastructure.
Modal specializes in cloud infrastructure for autonomous AI agents, which require intensive CPU resources for data processing and software execution. The company believes the performance gains offered by the Arm-based Vera architecture justify the significant engineering effort required to port its software, which currently runs on x86 processors.
While the reported 2x throughput advantage is notable, Modal has not disclosed specific benchmark configurations, performance-per-watt data, or the exact models of AMD and Intel processors used in the comparison. It remains uncertain whether the performance boost stems from the Arm v9.2-based Olympus cores, the 1.2 TB/s memory bandwidth, or other architectural features.
Modal CEO Erik Bernhardsson confirmed the company will maintain a heterogeneous server fleet, continuing to use x86 chips alongside the new Vera hardware. The firm plans to evaluate future processor generations from AMD and Intel as they become available to determine the most suitable hardware for specific workloads.
