Microsoft is reportedly developing a next-generation Xbox handheld device targeted for a holiday 2027 release. Following this, the company is expected to launch a new console, codenamed Project Helix, during the 2028 holiday season, according to a report from Fortune.
The upcoming Project Helix console may represent a family of devices rather than a single unit. While Microsoft has established a multi-year partnership with AMD to develop a portfolio of hardware, it remains unclear if the handheld will be manufactured by Microsoft or a third-party partner like Asus.
Internal projections suggest the Project Helix console could carry a consumer price point between $1,200 and $1,800. This high cost estimate assumes Microsoft does not choose to subsidize the hardware. Additionally, reports indicate internal friction between the Windows and Xbox teams regarding the software direction for the new platform.
Beyond hardware, Microsoft is reportedly considering an overhaul of the Game Pass subscription service. Potential changes include introducing ad-supported tiers and flexible add-ons for cloud gaming and multiplayer. Meanwhile, CEO Asha Sharma has recently reversed previous price hikes and removed day-one access for Call of Duty titles to address affordability concerns.
