Wizards of the Coast is expanding the Magic: The Gathering Commander format this November with the release of four Star Trek Universes Beyond preconstructed decks. This launch marks a shift by introducing two new Commander-specific mechanics, Battlefront and Seek Out, which are designed to integrate into the game's evolving landscape.
The Battlefront ability, featured in the Klingon Fury deck, rewards aggressive play by triggering based on the number of opponents attacked during a turn. For instance, Worf, Defiant Commander allows players to exile and play cards from their library based on this count. Meanwhile, the Seek Out mechanic triggers upon drawing a second card each turn, as demonstrated by Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary, who utilizes it to place counters on creatures and spacecraft.
Additional decks include the Borg Queen, which utilizes the Assimilate mechanic to convert opponent creatures into Borg artifact creatures, and a deck led by Commander Spock. Spock features the Strange New Worlds ability, allowing players to cast cards from the top of their library for free based on the number of differently named lands they control.
While mechanics like Battlefront and Seek Out are generic enough to potentially reappear in future sets, others like Strange New Worlds are less likely to return. All four decks are scheduled for release on Nov. 13.
