The upcoming Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Universes Beyond set, arriving next month, introduces a unique way to lose inspired by the Kobayashi Maru training exercise. The mythic rare blue enchantment, Kobayashi Maru Scenario, forces players to navigate a no-win scenario by offering modal choices during their upkeep. After three turns, the player must abandon ship and lose the game.
The card functions similarly to Demonic Pact, providing powerful benefits like drawing cards, bouncing creatures, or creating tokens before the inevitable defeat. Players may attempt to mitigate this risk by using cards like Donate to pass the enchantment to an opponent, mirroring James T. Kirk’s famous rule-bending approach to the simulation.
Beyond this specific card, the set reintroduces Spacecraft and Station mechanics, allowing players to crew iconic vessels. The Borg faction utilizes the Assimilate ability to convert opponent creatures from the graveyard into artifact creatures. Meanwhile, the Federation mechanic rewards cooperation among diverse creature types, and the Strange New Worlds ability scales effects based on the number of differently named lands controlled.
Additionally, the Beam Me Up mechanic allows players to return a creature to their hand as a cost to cast instants or sorceries from the graveyard. The set is scheduled for release on Nov. 13.
