Lucasfilm Games is pivoting toward a more flexible development strategy, prioritizing smaller-scale, offbeat projects alongside traditional triple-A titles. Following the 2026 releases of the XCOM-style tactics game Zero Company and the arcade racer Galactic Racer, vice president Douglas Reilly confirmed that collaborating with independent studios is now a core component of their long-term vision.
The company aims to explore various genres within the Star Wars universe, focusing on the specific experience and fantasy delivered rather than strictly adhering to large-budget production models. Reilly noted that while they maintain a high quality bar and typically favor experienced teams, they are increasingly open to pitches from diverse partners capable of surprising audiences.
This approach marks a significant departure from Disney's post-2012 strategy, which previously relied on an exclusive, decade-long licensing agreement with Electronic Arts. Since resurrecting the Lucasfilm Games brand in 2021, the organization has sought to broaden its creative scope beyond the limitations of its earlier exclusive partnerships.
Despite this shift, major projects remain in the pipeline. Upcoming titles include the third Star Wars Jedi entry, Quantic Dream’s Star Wars: Eclipse, and the long-gestating Knights of the Old Republic remake. Additionally, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced at The Game Awards in 2025, ensuring that familiar blockbuster experiences continue to coexist with smaller, experimental releases.
