French developer Don't Nod, known for titles like Life is Strange and Jusant, is currently facing severe financial instability. Following the loss of funding from Tencent, the studio has struggled to maintain its commercial operations, leading to a critical situation where the company is fighting to stay afloat.
The company's financial crisis was exacerbated throughout 2024 as recent releases, including Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, failed to meet sales expectations despite positive critical and player reception. Furthermore, the studio's action-adventure title Aphelion also underperformed, negatively impacting the firm's financial results during the first half of the year.
In response to these challenges, Don't Nod has implemented a reorganization plan that includes potential layoffs and the centralization of development efforts in France. This strategy involves reducing the role of its Montreal studio, which was established in 2020, and adopting a more contained production structure.
To address its mounting difficulties, the studio has officially initiated a financial protection procedure. This legal step is intended to facilitate necessary negotiations with creditors as the company attempts to navigate its ongoing economic instability.
