The Swedish game studio Liquid Swords, developer of the action title Samson, has officially declared bankruptcy. This development follows a period of financial instability where employees reportedly went months without receiving their salaries. Reports from Videogames Chronicle, Break It, and PC Games indicate that the Swedish state is expected to provide compensation to the studio's approximately 30 employees.
Founded in 2020 by Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg, the studio focused on its debut open-world project, Samson. The game was released on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in April, followed by a console launch in September. Despite the studio's ambitions, the project faced significant technical issues and bugs, which were noted as points of criticism following its release.
Christofer Sundberg previously acknowledged that the studio released a game with flaws, citing multiple reasons for the poor state of the launch. He had expressed an intention to address player feedback and improve the experience. However, the studio had already signaled economic distress by initiating layoffs in February 2025, prior to the current bankruptcy filing.
The future of the studio and the Samson title remains highly uncertain. While leadership is actively seeking a buyer for the company, no sale or plans for continued support have been confirmed. This situation highlights ongoing industry challenges regarding financial sustainability and widespread staff reductions.
