Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., has expressed concerns regarding the rising influence of artificial intelligence in the video game industry. He suggests that this technology may exacerbate existing issues related to a lack of creativity and original game design.
Sakurai emphasizes that developers should strive to discover novel ways for players to interact with various genres. He notes that while many creators are capable of refining existing concepts, the true challenge lies in developing original ideas that surprise players with experiences they did not know they wanted.
The developer warns that AI could lead to a market saturated with derivative works and easy copies. With over 19,000 games currently released annually, Sakurai fears that AI-driven production will increase this volume significantly, potentially resulting in many unplayable titles that merely mimic established games.
While acknowledging that AI might be used to clone beloved titles like ICO or Shadow of the Colossus, Sakurai maintains that such tools cannot replicate the unique creative vision of individual developers like Ueda. He views the current trend of games resembling one another as a significant hurdle for true innovation.
