Key information
Rockstar Games has confirmed a significant design shift for Grand Theft Auto VI, with artistic director Aaron Garbut revealing that the roads in Vice City will be considerably narrower than those found in Los Santos from GTA 5. This decision was established during the early stages of the project and has fundamentally influenced the construction of the entire urban environment.
According to journalist Jason Schreier, the wider streets in GTA 5 allowed for high-speed driving and easy maneuvering, often resembling a racing game rather than a realistic depiction of a city. In contrast, the new approach for GTA 6 incorporates narrower roads paired with denser traffic, which is intended to make navigating the city more challenging and immersive.
This structural change required artists to reorganize the urban layout and construct more buildings to accommodate the tighter road network. Development of the game's map has been a long-term effort, with some artists beginning work as early as 2015 by documenting Miami, leading to over a decade of development for the title.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games has not yet announced a version for PC, and the title is positioned as the most immersive evolution of the series to date.
