The Norwegian developer Funcom has initiated a new restructuring process, resulting in another wave of layoffs. This decision follows the recent console release of their major project, Dune: Awakening, mirroring a similar reduction in staff that occurred after the game's 2025 PC launch.
Alongside these personnel changes, the company announced a leadership transition. Rui Casais is stepping down as CEO after 22 years with the firm, including 11 years in the top role. He will be succeeded by Scott Junior, a 25-year veteran of the organization.
Casais described Dune: Awakening as the studio's largest undertaking, noting that it required significant development resources across all branches. With the title now launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the company claims its operational needs have shifted, as fewer staff are required for post-launch maintenance.
Incoming CEO Scott Junior stated that his priority is organizing Funcom to support long-term expansion through new content. Despite the workforce reduction, the studio remains committed to producing ongoing updates for both the Dune and Conan franchises.
