A report from early 2026 indicates that 23% of Generation Z suffers from telephobia, an irrational fear of phone calls. While 67% of baby boomers feel comfortable making calls, only 33% of younger individuals share this sentiment, leading many to avoid voice communication entirely.

To address this preference for asynchronous communication, Google has launched a feature called Call for Me. This tool utilizes Gemini to handle voice interactions, allowing users to avoid the immediate pressure of traditional phone conversations by delegating tasks to an AI agent.

The system functions by allowing users to select pre-designed options, such as checking business availability or booking reservations, directly through Google search. After the user provides specific details via a survey, the virtual agent performs the call on their behalf to complete the request.

Currently, this functionality is limited to the United States under specific subscription and configuration requirements. Critics argue that while the service offers convenience, it may increase user dependency on corporate platforms and further promote an impersonal society rather than focusing on genuine accessibility improvements.
