Key information
David Jaffe, the creator of the original God of War titles, recently shared insights into the development of the series' iconic protagonist. In a video posted to his Twitter X account, Jaffe revealed that the character was initially intended to be named Dominus.
The development team ultimately abandoned the name Dominus due to persistent jokes. Because the name sounded similar to the pizza chain Domino’s, staff members frequently made references to pizza delivery, such as shouting about thirty-minute delivery guarantees. After the name was mocked approximately 50 times, the team decided to discard it.
Following the rejection of Dominus, the team consulted a list of Greek mythological names. While Jaffe highlighted options like Julius, Parthenius, and Maksym, the team remained unsatisfied with their selections. The name Kratos was eventually suggested by Marketing Lead Susan Panico, despite it being overlooked on the initial list.
Jaffe expressed surprise that the name of the franchise's hero had been present on their list all along without their notice. He attributed the eventual success of the game to a combination of good fortune, timing, and effective marketing.
