The iconic protagonist of the God of War franchise was nearly named Dominus instead of Kratos. David Jaffe, director of the original trilogy, revealed that the name was abandoned due to persistent jokes from the Santa Monica Studio development team.
The team frequently mocked the name Dominus by referencing Domino's Pizza slogans, such as "30 minutes or free." Jaffe noted that after hearing these jokes roughly 50 times, the studio decided the name was no longer viable for their hero.
To find a replacement, Jaffe reviewed a list of Ancient Greek baby names, though he found his initial highlighted selections like Julius and Parthenius unsatisfactory. The name Kratos was eventually suggested by marketing lead Susan Panico.
Jaffe recently discovered the name Kratos was actually present on his original list of potential names, though it remained unhighlighted at the time. He attributed the success of the character to a combination of luck, timing, and marketing efforts.
