David Jaffe, the director of the original God of War, revealed that the iconic protagonist Kratos was nearly named Dominus. Jaffe intended the name to convey a sense of power and dominance, but the choice faced unexpected hurdles within Santa Monica Studio.
The development team frequently made jokes referencing the pizza chain Domino's whenever the name was spoken. Jaffe recalled that after hearing colleagues shout slogans like "30 minutes or it's free" approximately 50 times, the team realized the name was untenable and risked undermining the character's gravitas.
To find a replacement, the team reviewed a list of ancient names. While Jaffe initially considered options like Julius, Parthenius, and Maksym, it was marketing executive Susan Panico who suggested Kratos. The team ultimately adopted this name, which had been on their original list all along, though it went unnoticed by Jaffe at the time.
It is noted that the initial candidates were not actually Greek. Names like Dominus and Julius are Latin in origin, while others were Slavic variants or Latinized transcriptions, highlighting a lack of cultural accuracy in the early selection process.
