VISUAL ARTS, the developer and publisher behind Jun Maeda's titles, announced on October 19, 2026, that the Clannad creator has been diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer. Maeda is currently receiving medical care for the condition.
Maeda first experienced discomfort in his nasal cavity and throat during early spring. Symptoms, including swelling and pain, worsened throughout the summer, leading to the formal diagnosis.
Rather than pursuing active treatment, Maeda has opted for palliative care to conserve his strength for his creative work. Consequently, he is unable to participate in further scenario or music production while undergoing treatment, and projects like Heaven Burns Red face delays.
Despite his health challenges, VISUAL ARTS confirmed that Maeda completed the main story narrative and lyrics for the first half of Chapter 6 in Heaven Burns Red, ensuring the conclusion of that chapter is prepared.
