A community-developed mod for Tekken 6, created by Ekspym, has introduced rollback netcode to the title. Since its release two weeks ago, the project has gained significant traction, recording over 4,547 downloads by October 15 and reaching more than 10,000 players by October 17.
The mod functions similarly to an emulator, though it does not include game files or firmware. While Western players often defend such projects as a way to access legacy titles, the release has triggered intense backlash from competitors in Japan and Korea.
Pro player Dogura criticized the mod as crossing a moral line, expressing concern over the lack of negative sentiment from overseas users. Other Japanese players, including Higemura, argued that unauthorized services infringe on Bandai Namco’s rights and threaten the future of the Tekken series by diverting potential revenue.
The debate highlights a cultural divide regarding copyright and emulation. While some East Asian players equate the mod to theft or severe social transgressions, Western users argue that playing otherwise inaccessible games does not harm developers. Bandai Namco has not yet issued a response to the project.
