The Japan Actors Union has introduced formal guidelines aimed at curbing the unauthorized application of generative AI in replicating voice performances. This initiative seeks to ensure that human expression remains central to the industry despite ongoing technological progress.

Under the new framework, developers must secure explicit consent at every stage of AI usage, including the initial training phase. Any AI-generated replication of a performance is classified as a new performance, necessitating additional royalty payments or compensation for the original actor.

The guidelines extend protections to deceased performers, requiring that permission be granted during their lifetime, alongside consent from their families and agencies. Furthermore, the union mandates that AI-driven translations must preserve the artistic integrity of the original work and cannot be deployed internationally without authorization.

The union intends to promote these standards as industry-wide rules while lobbying the government for legislation to protect voice rights. This move follows global industry trends, such as the 2025 SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Video Game Agreement, which established safety guardrails regarding digital replicas and consent requirements.
