Intel is currently developing support for its XMX-accelerated XeSS technology within Valve's Proton compatibility layer. This initiative aims to replace the existing, less efficient upscaling implementation currently utilized by the software.

The integration focuses on leveraging dedicated XMX cores found in Intel graphics hardware to significantly boost upscaling performance. Furthermore, Intel is highlighting XeSS 3.0, which introduces multi-frame generation capabilities capable of inserting up to three frames between rendered ones to potentially quadruple frame rates.

Future hardware, such as the Panther Lake SoC featuring Xe3 cores, is designed to enhance these AI-assisted tasks. These chips include eight matrix engines per core, doubling peak FP16 and INT8 throughput compared to previous Xe2 architectures, which should further optimize frame generation and denoising processes.

By enabling XMX-accelerated XeSS, Intel intends to provide Linux users with a substantial performance increase. This move aligns the company with broader industry trends toward AI-driven frame insertion technologies.
