Research from Sensor Tower indicates that independent developers and original intellectual properties significantly increased their market presence in 2026. Comparing data from September 2025 through August 2026 against the previous year, the number of games selling over 500,000 units in their first month rose from 55 to 76. Total unit sales for these titles grew by 51%, reaching 182.4 million.

Indie titles accounted for 43% of these successful launches in 2026, up from 24% in 2025. While sequels remain strong, representing 55% of month-one paid units, new series also gained traction, comprising 53% of the 2026 cohort. Original IP, defined as properties owned by developers rather than licensed, expanded from 44 to 61 titles.

Karl Kontus of Sensor Tower notes that while AAA performance remained stable, indie growth is additive rather than cannibalistic. Indie success spans diverse genres, including viral "friendslop" games like Meccha Chameleon and anticipated sequels such as Slay the Spire 2. However, AA studios saw their share of first-month unit sales decline from 21% to 14%.

Original IP offers higher potential ceilings but increased risk compared to established franchises. While AAA publishers currently favor lower-risk projects, with only 5 of 28 hits being brand-new, innovation is increasingly driven by indie and AA studios. This shift suggests a potential future pivot for larger publishers seeking growth.
