During the Paley International Summit in New York City, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick and Sony Group Corporation head Hiroki Totoki discussed the role of artificial intelligence in entertainment. Both leaders agreed that while AI serves as a useful tool, it cannot replace human creativity.
Totoki emphasized that creativity is inherently human and must be protected, noting that Sony encourages staff to utilize technology while simultaneously safeguarding the rights of artists and creators. Zelnick echoed this sentiment, describing AI as a collection of backward-looking datasets and large language models, whereas true creativity is forward-looking.
Zelnick argued that data-driven models fail to predict unexpected hits. He cited the success of the film Home Alone, which was initially considered a disaster by Warner Bros. before becoming the highest-grossing comedy of all time. He concluded that because major hits are often unpredictable, datasets cannot replicate the creative process.
The integration of AI into production pipelines remains a contentious topic across the industry. While some executives encourage employees to learn how to leverage AI tools to remain competitive, others face public pressure to limit AI-generated content in gaming platforms.
