Square Enix studio head Naoki Hamaguchi is nearing the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy with the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Having dedicated over a decade to this ambitious project, Hamaguchi describes the development process as passing in a flash due to his intense focus.
The original 1997 PlayStation title remains a significant cultural milestone that helped transition gaming into a mainstream medium. The narrative follows Cloud Strife and his allies as they oppose a powerful corporation, a story that Hamaguchi and his team view as increasingly relevant today.
Since the 2020 launch of the first remake chapter on PlayStation 4, the series has diverged from the original game by introducing alternate realities. While the 2024 sequel Final Fantasy VII Rebirth featured characters navigating different timelines, Hamaguchi explicitly rejects the multiverse label for the series.
Instead of a multiverse, the development team characterizes the narrative structure as multilayered. Hamaguchi notes that the creative team frequently uses the term reunion to describe the project's thematic approach, which was conceived over seven years ago.
