Key information
Rockstar head of development Aaron Garbut recently indicated that the sheer scale and intricate detail of Grand Theft Auto 6 mean no single individual possesses complete knowledge of the game's contents. This complexity is attributed to a development culture where staff members exercise autonomy to implement features they deem impressive, rather than strictly adhering to a top-down list of requirements.
This autonomous approach previously resulted in the inclusion of realistic, temperature-sensitive horse testicles in Red Dead Redemption 2, a feature not mandated by creative leads. Similarly, the contextual interaction system in that title originated from individual initiative rather than executive direction. Such creative freedom suggests that unexpected, highly detailed mechanics could similarly appear in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6.
Technical adjustments for the new title include significantly narrower roads compared to Grand Theft Auto 5, designed to heighten the player's experience of traffic. The production team has expanded substantially, with the art department growing from five or six members on the previous entry to 65 individuals for this project. Overall, the company has grown from 2,441 to 4,711 employees since 2018.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on 19th November. The development period has faced challenges, including unauthorized gameplay leaks and an ongoing employment tribunal in Scotland concerning the alleged unjust termination of 31 staff members at Rockstar North.
