Key information
God of War creator David Jaffe recently disclosed that the series' iconic protagonist was originally named Dominus. Jaffe initially favored the name for its brutal and dominant connotations, but the development team frequently mocked it with Domino’s Pizza jokes.
The constant references to pizza delivery slogans and the Noid eventually forced Jaffe to abandon the name. After failing to find a suitable replacement from a list of Greek baby names, marketing lead Susan Panico suggested Kratos, which Jaffe had previously overlooked.
Jaffe noted that the name Kratos, which translates to power or strength in Ancient Greek, proved to be a fitting choice. He attributed this successful pivot to a combination of luck, timing, and effective marketing efforts.
Since the 2005 debut, the franchise has expanded significantly. Upcoming projects include the February 16, 2027 release of God of War: Laufey, a Prime Video television adaptation, and confirmed remakes of the original trilogy.
