Rockstar Games is scheduled to launch Grand Theft Auto VI this November, marking the end of a 13-year wait since the previous entry. The title features protagonists Jason and Lucia navigating the expansive, detailed setting of Leonida, which is modeled after Florida.
The game is expected to be a massive commercial success, with preorder revenue estimates ranging from $1 billion to $4 billion. Consumers are purchasing the standard edition for $80, while the Ultimate Edition is priced at $100.
While Rockstar has not disclosed the official development budget, the project represents an unprecedented level of ambition. However, the industry-wide pursuit of such massive, high-budget titles is viewed as a dangerous trend that may negatively impact game quality and developer welfare.
Despite the gaming sector generating $200 billion in 2025—significantly outperforming the film and sports industries—the market faces a crisis characterized by widespread developer layoffs. These job losses frequently occur even following the successful release of major AAA titles.
