Key information
According to a Fortune profile of CEO Asha Sharma, Xbox is reportedly planning additional rounds of layoffs scheduled for this month, November, and January. These cuts are part of an ongoing effort that has already seen two previous waves of staff reductions this year, with the company aiming to eventually remove 3200 employees from its books.
Management's strategy of executing these layoffs in multiple waves has reportedly left staff feeling demoralized. The report notes that these plans remain subject to change, though the uncertainty has created a difficult environment for employees concerned about their future at the company.
Beyond personnel changes, Xbox is reportedly developing an overhaul for its Game Pass subscription service. The proposed model aims to offer users more flexibility through an à la carte system, allowing subscribers to select specific features such as cloud gaming, multiplayer access, or console-only add-ons within a tiered structure.
The company is also reportedly working on a next-generation handheld device targeted for the 2027 holiday season, alongside a new console expected in 2028. Internal projections suggest the console could cost between $1,200 and $1,800, unless the company chooses to subsidize the hardware.
