Sucker Punch has released Ecos of Sekigahara, a new expansion for Ghost of Yotei. The DLC explores the past of protagonist Atsu, specifically the period between her family tragedy and her quest for vengeance, centered around the historic Battle of Sekigahara. According to art director Joanna Wang, the team collaborated with Japanese historians to ensure the narrative aligns with real events while focusing on Atsu’s personal journey.
The expansion introduces significant gameplay changes, building upon the base game's shift from stance-based combat to a weapon-focused system. Lead design developer Parker Hamilton noted that players can now utilize temporary weapons found in the environment, including melee power-ups. These additions aim to maintain the series' strategic depth while allowing for more creative combat improvisation.
Ecos of Sekigahara also features a new roguelike mode titled The Most Wanted. This mode emphasizes combat replayability by allowing players to control different characters, including the return of Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. Hamilton explained that bringing Jin back involved integrating his classic stances and abilities into the updated mechanics of Ghost of Yotei, presenting a complex design challenge for the team.
The expansion and the new roguelike mode are currently available for players on the PlayStation 5 platform.
