Gavin Goslin, a former Treyarch level designer who spent over 15 years at the studio, has publicly criticized Activision executives for profiting from the re-releases of Black Ops 1 and 2. Goslin argues that while these titles continue to generate significant revenue, the original developers who endured intense crunch to create them receive no financial compensation.
The re-releases, which launched in July, are simple re-issues rather than remasters. Despite this, they achieved notable commercial success, reportedly selling approximately 11 million copies and generating nearly $450m. Data from Circana identified these titles as the highest-earning games in July and the fifth highest-earning games of the year.
Goslin highlighted a perceived industry flaw regarding how talent is valued, noting that executives benefit from old code while original creators may face unemployment. He advocates for the implementation of legacy rewards and protections for developers who contributed to the success of games that continue to provide publishers with financial windfalls years later.
The conversation surrounding these claims has gained traction across gaming media. Meanwhile, Activision has been asked for comment on the matter. As the company navigates this criticism, it is also preparing for the upcoming release of Modern Warfare 4 on 23rd October.
