The European video game age rating agency, PEGI, has initiated a policy to increase the age classification of digital games containing loot boxes to 16. This rollout, which began this week, is expected to continue throughout October.
According to Connor Hinde of the Games Rating Authority, the organization is applying updated criteria to existing digital products. Games previously rated PEGI 3, 7, or 12 that include paid random items will now be reclassified as PEGI 16.
Specific titles affected by this change include the EA Sports FC series, which moved from a PEGI 3 rating, and Zenless Zone Zero, which increased from 12 to 16. Other titles like Monopoly Go may also face reclassification due to their randomized mechanics.
This initiative follows a March announcement regarding PEGI's intent to address loot boxes and addictive mechanics. While this update aims to inform parents about monetization risks, it applies specifically to digital-only games, leaving the responsibility of monitoring gameplay largely to parents.
