Brandon Stirrup, a business strategist at Xbox, recently sparked controversy by claiming the gaming industry is pretending not to use artificial intelligence. Stirrup asserted that developers who reject AI's role in the future should not remain in the business, suggesting that widespread adoption is already occurring across the sector.
To demonstrate his point, Stirrup revealed he created a basic game using AI in just three hours. He argued that his goal was to end the industry's pretense regarding AI usage, noting that companies are utilizing the technology in 2026. Following significant backlash on social media, an Xbox source confirmed that Stirrup deactivated his X account.
The industry's relationship with AI remains complex. While Epic Games plans to use AI for its upcoming Star Wars shooter, Capcom clarified that it uses AI tools only to improve development efficiency rather than for large-scale generative asset creation. Meanwhile, AI is increasingly impacting modding communities and hardware jailbreaking efforts.
Despite public hesitation, AI integration is growing. Tools are already embedded within platforms like Unreal Engine, and developers are increasingly relying on these technologies for tasks ranging from code generation to hardware security analysis, signaling a shift toward more transparent adoption.
