The indie horror game Mouthwashing, developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, is reportedly being adapted into a feature film. According to information from leaker Daniel Richtman, Screen Gems, a division of Sony, is currently developing the project.
The narrative centers on the five-member crew of the Tulpar, a corporate freighter transporting mouthwash through deep space. The plot is set in motion after the captain intentionally crashes the vessel into an asteroid, leaving the survivors to struggle with dwindling resources and rising interpersonal tensions.
The game features a first-person perspective and an aesthetic reminiscent of PlayStation 1 graphics. It has achieved significant critical acclaim, currently holding a 95% positive rating on Steam. The short, self-contained nature of the story is noted as a factor that could simplify the adaptation process for Screen Gems.
While the film project lacks a confirmed director, screenwriter, or release schedule, Screen Gems has prior experience adapting horror games, having worked on the Until Dawn film. Mouthwashing originally launched in September 2024, with console versions for PS5, Xbox, and Switch arriving in 2025.
