Epic Games recently unveiled a preview of its launcher for Windows, macOS, and Linux, emphasizing significant improvements in application startup times. The company aims to challenge Steam's dominance in the PC market by optimizing how quickly users can access their storefront.
To achieve these gains, Epic Games utilized generative AI, a process they refer to as vibe-coding, to assist in writing code. Epic reported that their updated launcher now initiates in 5,47 seconds, contrasting this with their measurement of 10,07 seconds for Steam.
Valve responded by releasing a client update on October 13, which specifically targeted startup performance. Following this patch, user testing by girlglock_ on Twitter indicated that Steam now opens in 5,23 seconds, surpassing the speed claimed by Epic Games.
Despite these figures, reports from VideoCardz note that there is no confirmation regarding whether identical hardware, startup conditions, or measurement methodologies were employed by the parties involved. Epic Games continues to prioritize AI-driven development for its software solutions.
