Epic Games has introduced a beta version of its redesigned launcher, which the company claims achieves a 46% faster cold start to store page time compared to Steam. Additionally, the new software is reportedly 14% faster when restoring from the system tray to the library.
According to Martin Keely, vice president and general manager of the Epic Games Store, the library loads 30 times faster than the previous version. The startup process is twice as fast, and the application maintains a small 300mb footprint to accommodate various hardware configurations.
The launcher was rebuilt from the ground up using a new tech stack. Epic describes the software as "vibe coded," indicating that AI was utilized as a development tool to improve efficiency. Keely noted that this approach allowed a small team to rewrite the codebase and support Windows, Mac, and future Linux versions.
This release aligns with Epic's broader "AI-first" production strategy. CEO Tim Sweeney stated the company is retooling for maximum AI acceleration to enable teams to build more content, though this shift has reportedly resulted in delays for an upcoming Disney-themed shooter project.
