Frontier Developments has unveiled granular details regarding the Law and Disorder update for Elite Dangerous, scheduled for release this December. The update aims to refine the game's crime mechanics, specifically focusing on making criminal activities more lucrative and viable for players.
The detection system is becoming more nuanced, requiring NPCs to witness or discover crimes before penalties are applied. Players will initially enter an unconfirmed bounty state, which can be cleared if they successfully leave the scene before being scanned or tracked.
Criminal records will now be tied to the player character rather than individual ships, allowing players to switch vessels to manage their heat. However, ships can still accumulate notoriety through repeated criminal acts. Players may visit record cleaners in criminal systems to mitigate their status.
While these changes primarily target PvE, they also extend to PvP, managed by the Pilot’s Federation with its own tiering system. Players retain the option to disable crime reporting for PvP engagements, and powerplay-related actions remain exempt from these penalties.
