Norwegian developer Funcom is initiating a period of organizational restructuring and staff reductions. This shift follows the conclusion of major development work on its ambitious survival title, Dune: Awakening, which recently saw its console release on 22nd September.

The transition marks a move from full-scale production to long-term live service operations. Outgoing CEO Rui Casais, who is departing after 22 years, stated that the company cannot sustain the large team size required during peak development as it enters this new phase.

Scott Junior, previously the executive producer for Dune: Awakening, will take over as the new CEO. Despite the workforce reduction, Funcom maintains it is committed to supporting and expanding both Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles for years to come.

Since its initial PC launch last June, the game has evolved from a massive multiplayer survival experience to include private servers and a single-player mode. While the developer recently reported 1 million new survivors, this figure includes players accessing the title via Game Pass.
