As the Star Wars franchise approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, its broader reputation remains inconsistent. While television and film projects often face criticism for retreading familiar ground or focusing on Skywalker-related narratives, Lucasfilm Games has emerged as a potential savior for the brand through a more open-minded development strategy.
Following the conclusion of an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with EA in 2023, Lucasfilm Games has adopted a more flexible approach to partnerships. Executive Douglas Reilly noted that the company is now willing to accept pitches from a wider variety of developers, emphasizing that high-quality titles do not require a top-five publisher.
Recent releases illustrate this shift, with the turn-based tactics title Star Wars: Zero Company and the roguelike arcade racer Star Wars: Galactic Racer exceeding fan expectations. Unlike recent television spin-offs that critics argue make the galaxy feel small by obsessively connecting to established lore, these games prioritize original characters and distinct genre storytelling.
Looking ahead, Lucasfilm Games plans to continue surprising audiences with diverse projects from various partners. While the film and television divisions remain focused on upcoming releases like Ahsoka season 2 and Shawn Levy’s 2027 project Starfighter, there is hope that the success of the gaming division will encourage Disney to embrace similar creative risks.
